Beauty and the Beach

Custom Blonde Collection by Andrew Collinge

How do you look fabulous on the beach, soak up the sun, play in the sand and take a dip in the ocean without looking shiny, smudgy and a bit hot and bothered? There are a lot of cosmetics on the market that are formulated for just such a dilemma. They can be waterproof, smudge proof and some will protect you from harmful UV rays.

We all have our bugbears that we hate to reveal such as dark under eye circles and blemishes. Or maybe we have a favourite product such as a lipstick or eyeliner that we just can't go without, but unless you want to bare it all, you really don’t have to.

So let’s start with camouflaging your not so good points.

Estee Lauder 'Double Wear' Stay-in-place Flawless Wear Concealer

For blemishes and under eye circles I recommend Estee Lauder 'Double Wear' Stay-in-place Flawless Wear Concealer. This will give you up to 15 hours of waterproof coverage. The secret is always to use less product when you are in the sun both for a natural look and also because natural daylight is not forgiving of heavy handed application.

If you haven’t yet acquired a tan and want to add colour to your cheeks choose a peach or rose blush or a light golden bronzer. Powder really won’t work in the heat but you can achieve a beautiful natural look by rubbing a little cream blusher into the apples of your cheeks and blend softly outwards.

To create a healthy, dewy look, I love Ariane Poole Glow Stick in Adorable (£22.00) a gorgeous coral colour. To use, simply rub onto your cheekbones, forehead, chin, and the places where the sun would naturally hit your face.

For standout brows you’ll love Ariane Poole Brow Balm (£18.50). The Brow Balm is smudge proof and will stay in place all day. There are three wearable shades which makes it easy to match your natural brow shade.

Of course everyone loves mascara, but you need to bear in mind that it needs to be both smudge proof and waterproof on the beach. Ariane Poole Luxury Waterproof Mascara (£17.00) is long lasting and also stands up to sweat and humidity.

If lipstick is your thing then there is no shortage of choice as many lip and cheek colours are water-resistant due to formulations containing waxes and oils. Ariane Poole Gel Lipliner Pencil (£16.00) is the perfect product – long lasting up to 7 hours, waterproof and transfer proof. To use, first outline your lips and then fill in the whole lip. Choose Naked for a natural beachy look or Raspberry to get noticed.

CO by Andrew Collinge Hair Moisturiser

And let’s not forget beach hair. There’s a great selection of tricks you can use to ensure your hair looks great on the beach and will also prep your hair for the evening.

If you have long straight hair then braids are a great idea. They are also very trendy this season. It’s best if you first apply a leave-in conditioner to damp hair to make it workable. CO by Andrew Collinge Hair Moisturiser (£8.00) would be ideal.
Part your hair on the side and start a French braid that follows the hairline, working its way down toward the ear. Do this on each side of the parting. Lastly, secure the ends of the braids with elastic. As your hair dries in the sun the braids will set. You then just unravel the braids and use your fingers to rake through your hair to release fabulous waves.

TIGI Bed Head Beach Bound Protection Spray

The second look works on shoulder length or long hair and is great for layered hair too. Again spray the hair before you begin.
If your hair is coloured then a useful product is TIGI Bed Head Beach Bound Protection Spray (£14.95). It will protect against frizz and heat and has UV filters. Then take your hair back into a ponytail about half way up the back of your head. Place your left hand to the left of your hair and then ‘fold’ your hair over your hand. Then gently twist the hair moving up towards the crown of your head. Secure with 2 or 3 long pins and then tuck the ends of the hair under the pleat. You can wear this sophisticated look all day. Make sure that your hair is dry before you let it down and hey presto beautiful soft waves.
