The first Collinge salon was opened in 1940 in West Derby, Liverpool by Wilfred and Molly Collinge. His son, Peter, followed in his footsteps, training to become a hairdresser in the 1940s – honing his skills on the Mauretania.
Throughout the 1950s, Peter Collinge was a prolific competition hairdresser, winning competitions in the UK and Europe. Peter's growing reputation, gained from competition hairdressing, enabled him to open his own salon in 1954 in Liverpool.
As Liverpool's own beat generation made their mark, the company flourished and by the late 1960s there was a group of Peter Collinge salons within Merseyside.
Andrew Collinge, Peter's son, started hairdressing in 1974, completing his training at Michaeljohn, Albemarle Street, London. Whilst at Michaeljohn, Andrew assisted both Michael Rasser and John Isaacs on their photo shoots. On moving back to Liverpool in 1982, Andrew produced his own photographic work, entering the British Hairdressing Hall of Fame in 1987.
In the 1990s, Andrew won the British Hairdresser of the Year twice and launched his hair-care range, Andrew Collinge Salon Solutions. An excellent decade was capped off by Andrew winning the Grand AIPP Trophy, the first British Hairdresser to be presented the award by the Mondial Coiffure de Beaute in Paris.
The 1990s and 2000s saw the salon group, now called Andrew Collinge, expand into Chester and Manchester.
Today, there are six Andrew Collinge salons, two Graduate salons and a Training School. The group's flagship salon opened in 2005 on Castle Street in Liverpool, and in 2008 it was voted UK Salon of the Year by HAIR magazine. The company also have a salon situated within the prestigious department store Selfridges & Co, Trafford Centre, Manchester.
The Andrew Collinge Creative Team represent the company at major hairdressing events – most recently at the 2015 Alternative Hairshow at the Albert Hall in London. In February 2017, the team was on stage at Pro Hair Live at Manchester Central.
Over the years, members of the Creative Team have either individually or collectively been recognised as winners and nominees at the British Hairdresser of the Year Awards. Their creative work is often featured in UK and International magazines.
A premium new product range has recently been launched. CO by Andrew Collinge is a professional performance styling range and is available from our salons and website. CO by Andrew Collinge is a collaboration between clients and stylists, drawing from years of experience.
With Peter as Life President and Andrew as Creative Director and Chairman, the company is today being managed by Charlie Collinge, Wilfred's great grandson. Charlie joined the company as Managing Director in April 2015. His background is in design and retailing.
With Charlie's experience and knowledge, together with the dedicated and talented teams within the Andrew Collinge group, the company is set up for an exciting future.
To keep the salon stylists up to date with trends and techniques, Peter opened the Peter Collinge Hair Study Centre in Liverpool. The training salon also offered short bespoke private courses to visiting hairdressers from other salons throughout the UK.
In 1984, with training still very much in mind, the company was invited to become a Government Management Agent for Vocational Training. The initial training programme, known as Youth Training, was set up by Hazel Collinge and was soon recognised as the benchmark for NVQ training hairdressing.
Shortly following this, the company opened a Graduates salon. This new salon concept was the brainchild of Peter and Hazel and allowed apprentices in their third year to work in a stand-alone salon whilst being prepared for a position in the main salons.
Today, Andrew Collinge Training, under the direction of Peter and Hazel's daughter, Sarah Collinge, continues to deliver NVQ training to over 200 apprentices from 110 local salons in our two training schools in Birkenhead and Liverpool.
In their last inspection in 2007, Andrew Collinge Training received their third consecutive Grade 1 'Outstanding' achievement from Ofsted. This prompted the then Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education, Christine Gilbert, to say “I wholeheartedly congratulate Andrew Collinge Training on their success and hard work in delivering such high standards for their trainees, excellence does not happen by chance. The support and expertise which Andrew Collinge trainees can count on really helps to inspire and challenge these young people into becoming some of the most talented hairdressers in the country. There is no reason why all apprenticeships and work-based learning can’t be outstanding and I hope Andrew Collinge will be a source of inspiration to others".
